It's personal preference — but many whiskey drinkers find a single large sphere or rock gives them the aroma-opening benefit of a splash of water without diluting the pour as fast as a splash would.
How much does ice actually dilute a pour?
It depends heavily on shape. A sphere's low surface area means a typical two-ounce pour might only pick up a small amount of water over 15-20 minutes, versus much faster dilution from smaller, cracked or tray ice.
